Algeria pulled off one of the great World Cup upsets in 1982, beating reigning European champions West Germany 2–1 — the first African or Arab team ever to beat a European team at the tournament. 

Algeria finished its group games a day before West Germany played Austria, so both European teams took the field knowing that a West German win by one or two goals would send both through and eliminate Algeria. — Read the rest
